Off the clock

It started on a beach with my father's rod and a fish I had almost nothing to do with. Striped bass mostly since then, and offshore when the chance comes.

I'd like to say fishing is the one thing I do that has nothing to do with a screen, but that isn't quite true. Watch the birds, read the water, work out where the bait moved overnight, get there before the other boats. It's the same instinct as the day job. I've stopped pretending otherwise.

Better, not busier

My girlfriend, Dr. Jessica B. Stern, is a clinical psychologist and the founder of Three Lemons, where she works with organizations on burnout and sustainable performance. We arrived at the same conclusion from opposite ends of a very large field: she tells companies to stop asking people to absorb badly designed systems, I tell IR teams to stop hand-building the things a machine should be running. Her version has better evidence behind it.
